How the British society changed after the two World Wars
As we know, both the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century were marked by the radical presence in society and policy of the rigid Victorian values; that’s why new generations began seeking for more fluid values.
The birth of these brand-new values was widely halted by a profound sense of anguish and rootlessness which the two great wars had been spreading.
A first weak sign of changing there seemed to be when the young Windsor lady Elizabeth came to the throne and the Welfare State was born.
All of this developed good expectations that, however, were totally thrown away into disillusionment and apathy when people realized that the old class system had survived.
This arose within young people frustration but also desire of changing.
It was then that a new English culture was born; the new young generations spent a lot of money for their own pleasures, feeding up the trade of music, fashion, cosmetics, drinks, cars and motorcycles.
The ’60s were characterised by the birth of the boutiques, symbol of new trends and struggle against stereotypes.
One of these new trends was no doubt the “miniskirt”, drawn by Mary Quant.
In London, new fashion centres were born, such as Carnaby Street, which gave the city the name of “Swinging London”.
Music played an important role in this changing scenario.
These are the years of rock-’n’-roll, of which the main representative was a group, The Beatles.
But the ’60s were not just this; they were also the age of rebellion, irreverence, drug consumption, permissiveness in films and magazines, as well as in sexual attitudes, recognition of civil partnership even between persons of the same sex, contraceptive pill and women’s right revolution.
However, this climate of joy was going to go through a new age soon.
The ’70s showed a loss of trust, the birth of new negative generations, the punk generation and a radicalism that replaced pacifism.
