Latino: Pharsalia
Inglese: Coleridge, Blake e Wordsworth
The Delta has three vertices. As we can see graphically, two vertices are close to each other and one is far away from the others.
This way of seeing the Delta points me to three figures that are connected. I'm talking about the Lake Poets: Coleridge, Blake and Wordsworth. Specifically about their imagination.
The two closest vertices are represented by Wordsworth and Coleridge, who were close friends. The distant one is Blake, higher and thus almost different.
Wordsworth
Let's start with Wordsworth:
He's convinced that imagination is fundamental for poetry, the product of the poet's imagination. It is a creative impulse not controlled by reason, a special intuition which makes the poet see things that reason can't see. Through imagination the poet can discover the inner reality of things.
Wordsworth's poetic inspiration was not immediate but the result of "an emotion recollected in tranquillity", which means that inspiration can also come thanks to the memory of a past emotion which is reproduced in the poet's mind and turned into poetic form.
Coleridge
The closest vertex to Wordsworth, as I said, is Coleridge, and these two are connected not only by their relationship but because they made together the Lyrical Ballads. In the second edition, Wordsworth included a preface that is considered as the Manifesto of the Romantic movement.
So, Coleridge divides the imagination in two different kinds:
The first is connected with human perceptions and the individual power to produce images. Everybody has primary imagination but uses it unconsciously. This is where the second one comes in, voluntary and used consciously, where man has the faculty to use the data of reality to build new worlds using imagination.
So we can see how parallel the recollected memories are with the primary imagination and the "emotion copy" parallel with the secondary imagination.
Blake
Talking about a higher step of imagination, the way of "building a new world", there is Blake, who believes to have a supernatural power. So, higher than both. He describes his imagination as a supernatural sight, prioritizing visions over the common sight.
It's also important how Blake expresses his imagination; he does not only use words and poetry, but enriches it with illustrations, drawings and paintings.
