William Wordsworth

William Wordsworth belonged to the first generation of romantic poets. He was born in 1770 in the Lake District. At the age of 25, Wordsworth went to live with his sister. In these years he wrote many of his greatest poems. In 1798 he published the "Lyrical Ballads” together with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Two years later there was the second edition of “Lyrical Ballads" with the preface written by Wordsworth. The preface is considered the manifesto of English Romanticism and contains Wordsworth’s ideas about poetry and the task of the poet. He says that “poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility”.

He died in 1850. Wordsworth focused on nature, children, the poor, common people and used ordinary words to express his personal feelings. Wordsworth thought that childhood is the most important stage in man's life, because the child is nearer to God, and (also) he is wiser than an adult because he is less attached to this world and he uses his feelings and his heart. Wordsworth really thought that “the child is the father of the man", as he said in his poem “The Rainbow” where the poet expresses his love and joy at the sight of a rainbow in the sky, the same joy that he experiences when he was a child. He wrote also the intimations of immortality from recollections of early childhood.

Ode: Intimations of immortality from recollections of early childhood

The Ode on “Intimation of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood”, popularly known as “The Immortality Ode”, was written between 1802 and 1807. The ode consists of eleven stanzas: the first four stanzas deal with his poetic crisis and were written in 1802; the last seven stanzas were written (some) four years later. The poem was built upon a very simple and majestic plan. In this Ode Wordsworth introduced a Neoplatonic idea: the theory of reminiscence that tells that human soul comes into this world from its original home, heaven; and with the birth the child begins his journey from heaven to this (tangible) material world.

Fresh from heaven he finds himself wrapped in heavenly light and sees heavenly light in each and every object of nature. Thanks to his fresh and clear memories of heavenly life, a child comes to learn many truths which the grown-ups spend all their lives to learn. With the passage of time, the vivid memories of life in heaven fade out of man’s mind and he sees simply “the light of common day”. But there are moments in mature age in which the mind travels back to childhood days and gives him a sense of immortality. The immortality ode centres on the theme of loss and gain. The loss is the gradual decline of the powers of sensitivity and the keenness of imagination as a man passes from childhood to maturity.

Giovanni Pascoli
