Eveline
Eveline is a short story written by James Joyce, a famous Irish writer. 1904.
In “Eveline,” Joyce presents the dilemma faced by a young woman who must either care for her father and children or follow her boyfriend, a sailor who had a home in Buenos Aires.
Eveline is a nineteen-year-old girl who is planning to leave Ireland forever with a sailor whose name is Frank. At the start, Eveline was in her house. She sat at the window in the evening and could smell the dusty cretonne. She looked at the people passing outside, and she started to remember the past, when she was a child, when she was a girl out there and played with her brothers and other children, and her father was not so bad.
Now one of her brothers was dead, and also Tizzie Dunn was dead, a child that played with Eveline. Other friends of Eveline returned to England. Also, Eveline’s mother was dead. Her old father dislikes her and often threatens her with violence, accusing her of squandering his money. Eveline lives alone with him, as her brother has gone away (one died), and her mother died after a life of sacrifice.
Eveline wants to run away with a sailor, Frank. But the memory of a promise that Eveline made to her mother before she died prevents her from leaving. In fact, she promised her mother that she would keep the home together. She was paralysed because she did not know if she wanted to leave Ireland or not. She had every reason to leave Dublin:
- She has to work hard in the store and is accused of squandering money by her father.
- Her father abused her.
- Nobody protects her.
- She does not want to live like her mother.
Well, she thought that it would be better to go away with Frank and become his wife.
Frank had a home in Buenos Aires, and they went to the station to take a boat. But when the boat was ready to leave, she was paralysed, and Frank had to leave Eveline alone.
- Attempt the stream of consciousness: At the beginning, there is a continuous shift from past to present to future.
- Dust: Nothing changes in the house (paralysis).
