System inside of life and when you want to become a professor you kind of have to do both
right researching and teaching. I’m interested in this connection which I will tell you more
about today creative methods with which I will also tell you more about today and feminism,
which I’m always up for a conversation for when it comes to creative method. You can also
see this design digital disconnection and creative methods you won’t find AI generated
pictures on my slides but what I will do is that sometimes I draw something I scan it and then
I put it on the slide such as yeah if you’re interested in my work feel free to connect with me
via LinkedIn or about today’s agenda so I’m gonna start with a presentation of my research
and how it led me to the topic of use of avoidance then on the second part I will give you a
reflector on use of avoidance more broadly so I’m kind of transitioning from my work to what
is there to know about use of avoidance more in general and then we have a fashion and
answers and discussion so as I mentioned my big research interest about my topic and
project is about is digital disconnection many different words for it in research and
scholarship and especially in popular disguise so I think the most prominent term instead of
a detox that we scholar try not to use it because it implies the digital inherit toxic and when
you do research, you try to take a step back and read reevaluate things from okay there’s
never a neutral or objective perspective but of course reduced by us so we usually talk more
about digital engagement then you have digital resistance which is more about people
actively trying to fight against and innovation so you can also see there’s some kind of
innovation in the term the same with digital pushback and then we have media news, which
is because I’m researching Dental and try not to use the word detox and then I went to
media and then people are always so confused because they’re conducting research with
people who used I thought it was all about media use but the truth is that they are really only
few communities and people on this planet who don’t use any form of digital media so it’s
really more about how people calibrate the digital media use and then I started to use the
term reduce media people especially media communication scholars were not focusing on
digital disconnection. We’re like now I get it it’s really more about how to find the balance
very different forms of engaging in disconnection very interesting and contradictory form of
disconnection digital detox apps so some of you might’ve heard about the forest app but you
can grow a forest on like a tree on your phone while you don’t use it and then you can grow
a forest through that or some of you might have screen time limitations with you set a time in
which you don’t want to use your phone and then once you’ve been Let Instagram for half an
hour there’s a warning that says you actually set the screen time limit get off the app and
then there’s also the caveat that you can just click it away and then it doesn’t really work at
least there are temporary extensions so what is growing increasingly popular digital detox
retreats when people go on summer camp for adult adult adults where they try not to use
technology instead things like playing games doing creative things drawing painting painting
making their own marble jam. All these kind of things. There’s a very famous camp in
Norway but we’re now in the period so some people temporarily delete Instagram or another
social media of their phone for the land period and then after Easter they download it again
that would also be an example for temporary abstention then we have unfriending this is like
an umbrella term so many different practices fall under the term of unfriending besides really
resolving the friendship this is muting someone and following someone blocking someone
and now I’ve written the paper also arguing that not accepting someone’s friend request and
reporting someone who was done something harmful would also fall under the term of
unfriending it ought to do with not really trying to disconnect from technology itself, but from
a person who is on a platform in your disconnect from this person who’s doing something
harmful just annoying or maybe you don’t want to see influencers who just trying to have the
best life ever and you feel pressured to go through your phone following this on Instagram
when you unfollowed people that would also be considered and researching the interesting
thing that you can see it’s really about the relationship you have to devices and platforms but
also what you do when you are online or when you are using or not using a technology
platform, so it’s really more of a continuous spectrum we should try to navigate balance
calibrated the different very different words to try and describe and capture all these
phenomenon and research focus everyday smart use and use reduce use I even wrote it
they use non-use as a spectrum not either one really well so now I told you all about how
people often think that knowledge has taken over the world and it’s becoming too much and I
also saw that there were a couple of people nodding here in the audience when they were
like time limitation work for me but the interesting thing is that when we are probably if I were
to have this conversation with you just here in the hallway and chat about your media
consumption. So many people are really annoyed by my smart phone and I want to use it
less. It’s kind of a concise or when I’ve so if I were to have this conversation with you outside
there’s so many people who telling your word where you resonate with with my experience
this is an interesting topic so when I go to family parties, I usually don’t even even bring it up
anymore because I’m like I’m really tired of having the same conversation over and over
again but this is really an individual peoples perspective because when we look at nation
states and technology companies we see that they’re still continuous push for more
technology and more innovation and more digitalisation so when we take my national
backgrounds no way the ambition to become the most digital country by 2030 which is really
interesting because Norway is a skinny Navy country and already among the most
digitalised countries in the world countries are also known for breaking among the happiest
countries in the world world kind of see a shift it’s skinny nation leaders happiness to
digitalisation so they don’t kind of go around and we’re not the happiest nation on the planet
or we’re trying to get better I think they rank for now when they’re trying to kind of get that
title back it’s not all about who’s becoming the most digital nation in Germany often has a
very self deprecated identity around becoming digital because there are a lot of things where
they kind of missed the right point to the digitalisation race but they still have ambitions to
extend the infrastructure and I think this is a really important point building up infrastructure
and making the Internet accessible is really important and as I just mentioned it is not like a
white so whenever I share my work of my perspective it doesn’t mean that I’m against
technology technology or that I’m against the digitisation. It’s more that I’m pointing out it’s
not inherently good so if we take Germany as an example that really wants to be accessible
with everywhere no matter if you were in somewhere in the city centre or in the woods of
course it’s a good thing when you can use your phone an emergency when you are taking a
walk through the woods at the same time the whole experience of going out in nature and
brewing something leisurely disconnected off-line experience change is inherently good or
bad considering the different nuances that come with a change and what we see in countries
like Norway and Germany that they are also aware the digitalisation all these ambitions bring
about challenges that they referred to mainly privacy regulations in the GDP we know that
when we deal with data this is kind of a tricky thing, but they don’t really talk about a woman.
Yeah it’s nice when Internet is excessiv
