Series based on fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin
The series is set in a world where several noble families fight to control the mythical land of Westeros. For the inhabitants of this world, control of the Iron Throne holds the lure of great power. In this land, where seasons can last a lifetime, and beyond the Great Wall that protects them, a forgotten evil has returned.
Game of Thrones and Grice’s maxims
Game of Thrones is another series where Grice’s maxims can be observed, particularly the Maxim of Quantity (provide the right amount of information). In many scenes, these maxims are often used to create tension, intrigue, and character development. A notable example of this violation is seen in Tyrion Lannister's interactions, where he provides just enough information to be convincing without revealing everything, often to protect himself.
Tyrion Lannister's strategic communication
Tyrion Lannister is a master of conversation and often manipulates Grice’s maxims to his advantage. During his trial for Joffrey’s murder (episode 4x06), Tyrion carefully chooses his words, revealing enough to defend himself but withholding details that might incriminate him or his allies.
Maxim of Quality (tell the truth)
Littlefinger's strategic violations of the maxim of quality exemplify his manipulative nature and his talent for political intrigue. He tells Sansa Stark part of the truth about his involvement in Joffrey’s death to maintain control over the situation.
4X04
Sansa: "Did you kill Joffrey?"
Littlefinger: "I had a hand in it."
Sansa: "You did it? You don’t just decide to kill a king!"
Littlefinger: "No, it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. I planned it with a few people, but it was me who arranged for the poison."
Maxim of Relation (be relevant)
Varys and Littlefinger often make comments that seem irrelevant but have hidden meanings pertinent only to those who understand the full context.
Littlefinger: "The realm. Do you know what the realm is? It’s the thousand blades of Aegon’s enemies, a story we agree to tell each other over and over until we forget that it’s a lie."
1x03
Varys: "A very small man can cast a very large shadow."
Both maintain relevance only loosely, focusing more on philosophical musings than on concrete issues, which serves to mask their true intentions or plans.
