Advanced technology and systems
The most advanced products and systems are said to be at the leading edge of technology. Raw data is unprocessed, unanalyzed data. Prototypes are the first experimental versions of new technological ideas. High-technology are products, systems, or industries using advanced technologies. An invention is a new machine, device, or product. A theory is an idea or set of ideas designed to explain things. The validity of an experiment is tested by repeating the experiment to see if the results can be replicated or reproduced.
Internet and web concepts
Surf the net to look for information in a random manner. A hyperlink is a screen of information available on the Internet. Hypertext is a text which contains links to other texts or figures, tables, music, etc. A service provider is an organization that provides access to the Internet.
Data and information
Data is information. A database is a website with a large collection of data you can search through. Download means to copy information from the Web to your computer.

An E-mail address is an address (e.g. mary@bigtech.com) where you can send E-mail. An Email program is software you can use to send E-mail.
The Internet
The Internet is the worldwide network of computer networks. An Internet portal is a website that allows you to search the Web (e.g. Yahoo, Google). A keyword is a word or words you use with a search engine to find relevant websites. A link (also called “hyperlink”) is a “live” spot on a webpage; when you click on a link, you can jump from one webpage to another.
Login is the process of identifying yourself to a computer or website. Being online means being connected to the Internet or to a network. A password is a secret word you have to type to enter a computer system. Surfing the web means exploring many different websites. A URL (Universal Resource Locator) is a website's address. A username is a name you can use to enter a computer system.
Web browsing
A web browser is software that allows you to search the World Wide Web and look at the pages (e.g. Mozilla, Firefox, Internet Explorer). It is software allowing net users to find what they want.
A webcard is an electronic greeting card you can send to someone through the Internet. A webpage is an electronic page of information (e.g. text, pictures, sounds), similar to magazine pages, available on the World Wide Web. It is a system of highlighted expressions that allows users to go to other pages.
Web search and websites
A web search engine is part of an Internet portal that allows you to search the web using keywords. A website is a graphical interface which provides access to information on computers anywhere on the Net. It is a collection of webpages.
