Production management

Technical organisation of production systems.

Design methods.

Management methods.

Production: the process and methods used to transform tangible (materials) and intangible (ideas) inputs into goods or services. Resources used to create outputs.

Decision and action.

New product development process

Source → Manufact → Distribution → Market.

3 flows:

  • Physical flow from the suppliers to the customers.
  • Information flow / planning flow.
  • Cash flow / financial flow no specific rule / no specific way of payments.

Our course is about manufacturing stage, this area is the cross way of two main process: the point of sharing information and innovation and execution.

Product life cycle

Introduction   Growth   Maturity   Decline.

Introduction: product design and development critical.

  • Frequent change.
  • Attention on quality.
  • High costs of production.
  • There can be unusual expenses for Fine tuning.

Growth: forecasting critical.

  • Product design begins to stabilize.
  • Product reliability.
  • Practical to change price or quality image.

Maturity: competitive costs are critical. Defend market position.

Decline: cost control is critical.

Net revenue (profit).

Cost of development and production.

Sales revenue.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the main problems related to the design and management of production system.
  • Learn the relevant methods and techniques to solve them.
  • Basic knowledge to interact with all the company experts and professionals.

Introduction: Product design and development critical.

  • Frequent change.
  • Attention on quality.
  • High costs of production.
  • There can be unusual expenses for Fine tuning (more a punto).
  • Research product development, process modification.

Growth: forecasting critical.

  • Product design begins to stabilize.
  • Product reliability.
  • Practical to change price or quality image.

Maturity: competitive costs are critical, defend market position.

Decline: cost control is central.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the main problems related to the design and management of production system.
  • Learn the reference methods and techniques to solve them.
  • Basic knowledge to interact with all the company experts and professionals.

Production and logistics

Production: process and methods used to transform tangible inputs and intangible inputs into goods or services.

Is the crossing point of two key company process.

New product development.

Production and logistics.

A production system is a set of machines and assets that implements through an industrial technology, an industrial production process, to make goods.

Raw material.

Energy.

Information -> Equipment.

Personnel.

Service infrastructures -> Product.

Production process is a transformation process of resources into services.

Transformations may be of different types: physical, chemical, location, exchange....

Manufacturing and assembly

Manufact. + assembly.

After manufacturing process you can't reverse the process.

You can reverse the assembly process without significant denaturalization of the component.

In the production system the output of the previous phase are the inputs of the following one.

Production system design

Production system design - the general arrangements of workstations and resource requirements.

The performance is determined.

  • How fast.
  • How long.
  • How much.

Throughput (parts/minute).

Lead time or cycle time.

WIP (work in progress).

Representation

Necessity to represent how the process is structured.

Layout diagram - the way the production system is arranged.

Flow diagram - ASME symbology.

Flow chart - spaghetti.

BOM = Bill of Material is the list of all the raw mat.
