THE HOLOCAUST

In Germany the postwar period was characterized by strikes, demonstrations

and brutalities. The workers criticized the government because their salaries

were too low and between 1920 and 1921 caused a socialist biennium.

The right movement, enemy of the workers, began the clash with a lot of deaths.

In the same period, one exponent of the right founded the “brown shirts” or the

“attack team” similar to the “black shirts” of Mussolini, and created the Nazi

Party symbolized by the swastika. His name was Adolf Hitler.

In 1923 Hitler organized a coup at Munich but he was discovered and put in jail.

He stayed there a few months, but when he was in this prison cell he wrote “The

Mein Kampf”, a book where Hitler gathered all of his Nazi ideals. The most

important of his ideals was the superiority of the white man, because he

believed the Aryan race was the pure race. In the “Mein Kampf” he wrote that

the Germans were to become heroes and the only obstacle were Jews, because

they were without homeland and they belonged to the Semitic race. Thanks to

the crisis of the twenties, a lot of factories in Germany were closed and the

workers resumed strikes. The Nazi party gained votes and between 1932 and

1933 there was an election. The fascist party won. In consequence Hitler

became the Chancellor of Germany.
