The Burial of the death - first section
It's just the opening of the Waste Land and this is the first part of this poem. This part contains a lot of quotations, a lot of references to Shakesnparo Dante, Manner Boudalaire, so it's a mixing up of a lot of important intellectuals. The title, "The Burial of the Dead", that is the first part of Waste Land, refers to the Anglican right of the Burial of the Dead. To be precise, it's called "The Order of the Burial of the Dead". The first word is April: everyone is looking forward to April, everyone cannot wait to see April. Why are people waiting for April? Because it's spring time, so when we think about this, we think positively. Moreover, "April" is a close reference to Geoffrey Chaucer's general prologue, when he, just like T.S. Eliot, introduced his collection of poems writing about April, but in different attitudes, because T.S. Eliot defines April like the cruellest month. There is too much irony, because Eliot isn't talking about the people who really are dead, but he is talking about people who no longer welcome spring in the same way we do; he is talking about people who don't wait for spring. Spring means also rebirth, this is the reason why evervone of us is waiting for spring because it seems lust as if life is starting again so it is strictly connected with rebirth, but he is speaking about people who are not waiting for a new life.
Why are they in this condition?
Because they simply prefer the dead security of winter, so in a similar way ( this is the metaphor) modern man prefers to leave in a kind of spiritual darkness, in a kind of spiritual winter. The metaphor is this: generally, winter is a dark season, where there is no life and where everything seems to bedead; winter evokes a feeling of decay and darkness. But in this text, winter has a positive connotation, because people prefer the peaceful quietness of winter.
On the contrary, generally April stands for everything that is positive for us because it means life, new life, ribirth, it means new possibilities, but this is an objective correlative, just because when we mention April, we have positive
emotions, However, in this text, April has a negative connotation. In fact, existence is seen as cruel, and as a consequence, also generating new life is cruel. According to the text, also the rebirth of nature is cruel because
rebirth reminds death. Moreover, the pronoun “us” involves that also the writer is among those people who prefer winter.
