INTRODUZIONE
“Rime of the ancient Mariner”, sceglie di punire il vecchio marinaio
The Old Man and the Sea
(Ernest Hemingway)
"He always thought of the sea as 'la mar,'
which is what people call her in Spanish
when they love her. Sometimes those who love her say bad things
of her, but they are always said as though she were a woman.
Some of the younger fishermen spoke of her as 'el mar' which is
masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or even an
enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as
something that gave or withheld great favours, and, if she did wild
or wicked things it was because she could not help them. The
moon affects her as it does a woman.”
This is what Santiago, the main character of “The Old Man and the Sea”,
thought about the sea.
The old man and the sea is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway, published
in 1952. It was one of his major work, and it tells a love story about the
relationship developed over the years between a man and his lifelong friend
and foe, the sea. Hemingway took the inspiration of the book from a tale he
heard from Carlos Guttierez, one of his friends.
All the plot takes place in sea: Santiago has gone 84 days without catching
any fish at all. He is apparently so unlucky, and he’s helped by a young boy,
named Manolin.
At the eighty-fifth day he decided to go fishing alone. After waiting much time,
a fish rises to the bait: it was a big marlin with which he started an intense
battle for three days and three nights. In the end he won the fish and he killed
it without hate. In his way back he was assailed by sharks, enticed by the
4
blood of the marlin. He killed all of them, but when he reached the bank there
were only the head and the fish bones, because the sharks ate most of the
marlin that Santiago has captured.
As its title suggests, the sea is a central character in the novella. Most of the
story takes place on the sea, and Santiago is constantly identified with it and
its creatures; his sea-colored eyes reflect both the sea's tranquillity and
power, and its inhabitants are his brothers. Santiago is not like the other
richer fisherman, that referred to the sea as a man, he talks to it as a woman,
and the sea seems to represent the feminine complement to Santiago's
masculinity, but the sea is both feminine and masculine, kind and cruel.
He has a great passion in doing fishing, he doesn’t want to earn money;
Santiago is characterised by a noble aim despite he is in continuous struggle
with the sea and with its inhabitants he has a great respect for them, like sea
was his home and fishes were his family, in fact he often calls them
“brothers”.
“….fish, I love you and respect you very much. But I will
-
kill you…”
- “…I have killed this fish which is my brother and now I
must do the slave work…”
- “…Thank God, they are not as intelligent as we who kill
them; although they are more noble and more able…”
- “ You are killing me, fish. But you have a right to. Never
have I seen a greater, or more beautiful...thing than you,
brother” 5
It’s important in Santiago also the theme of the heroism, of the triumph over
crushing adversity.
What he does is to face adversity with dignity and grace, he’s not violent or
aggressive. He always behaves with honour and respect, especially to fishes
and sea. Santiago is also a bit pride, in fact was his vanity which lead him to
travel dangerously far out into the sea.
…Everything about him was old
except his eyes and they were
the same colour as the sea and
were cheerful and
undefeated… 6
allontana in mare aperto.
identificato c
