raramente, ci fermiamo e basta. In silenzio.
altrimenti ascoltava e stava in silenzio.
impossibile da abbattere (all’apparenza).

The great richness of the incommunicability
“We communicate only too well, in our silence, in what is unsaid, and… what takes place is continual evasion, desperate rear-guard attempts to
keep ourselves to ourselves”
Harold Pinter
Harold Pinter shows us the huge value of silence as a form of incommunicability, throughout his plays. The
unremembered Landscape and Silence, a book collecting two Pinter’s short-plays, is an amazing example of
how the Nobel-prized playwright analyses the secret universal meaning of “silence”.
The two plays are quietist. In the first, three people, and in the second, two, sit on chairs and talk, less to
each other than to the audience than to themselves. In each play what is talked about is remembered
things: brief love affairs illuminated by fleeting shafts of fading sunlight, or wan and grey in the invading
dusk of age and feebleness. Whereas Landscape is set in a very naturalistic setting and Silence is situated in
a place out of time and space, they both voice Pinter’s inquiry about how we relate to other people and it
seems like there’s no way of forging a communion of interests between individuals.
Every one-sided dialogue proves the characters guilty of the condemnation of their own lives and
demonstrates a substantial lack of communication and interaction between them: Landscape is about a
marriage with a sad ending, because of the husband’s unfaithfulness to his wife, who is constantly sank in
her romantic reverie; in Silence no man understands how he has missed happiness: the farmer, as he
contemplates his life, is puzzled and perplexed; the farm-hand feels more strongly: he is angry and
resentful at what life has done to him and he does not understand why; of the three it is the girl who had
the greatest capacity for joy: in her youth a radiance shines about her; but then life is even crueler with her.
Anyway, even if this “silence” makes the characters fall in a kind of disillusionment of their existences;
both the realistic depiction of any protagonist’s memory (made by Pinter in an unorthodox and brilliant
way) and the escapes from their grieves, show the reader the great worth, hidden quietly in the silence.
So, in Landscape, the girl says:
“BETH
All it is, you see … I said … is the lightness of your touch, the lightness of your look, my neck,
your eyes, the silence, that is my meaning, the loveliness of my flowers, my hands touching my
flowers, that is my meaning.”
In her passionate love, she managed to forgive her husband and eventually finds a redemption: “Oh my
true love I said” [end of the play]. In this way, her silence is an emblem of her great sensitivity and, because
of this, she’s back alive again.
