Premessa
Oliver Twist
Charles Dickens was born in Landport on 7 February, 1812. The turning point of Dickens's life occurred when he was 12 years old.
His father, who had a difficult time managing money and was constantly in debt, was imprisoned in 1824. Because of this, Charles was withdrawn from school and forced to work in a warehouse that handled 'blacking' or shoe polish to support the family.
This experience left deep psychological and sociological effects on Charles. It gave him a first knowledge of poverty and made him the most vigorous and influential voice of the working classes in his age.
He wrote in 1837 the novel ‘Oliver Twist’, in which presents the everyday existence of the lowest members of English society. He goes far beyond the experiences of the workhouse, extending his description of poverty to London’s squalid streets, dark alehouses, and thieves’ dens.
Charles Dickens died at home on June 9 and he was buried in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A statement distributed at his funeral read:
“He was a sympathiser to the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world.”
I would like to consider the movie ‘Oliver Twist’ directed by Roman Polanski and published in 2005.
Roman Polanski in his film transforms the timeless adventures of the young orphan's novel in an exciting story of the eternal struggle of good against evil.
So, one of the most visionary directors in film history gives us his personal vision of this great classic, reviving the London of the nineteenth century with all its colors and pitfalls, but also with its totally unexpected kindness.
Oliver Twist is an orphan boy of nine years old, skinny and low, with brown hair. He’s very poor, good character, shy, friendly.
The actor chosen by Polanski to the role of the protagonist, is the eleven years old Londoner Barney Clark. The child has a melancholy face that causes in viewers a poignant tenderness.
Just like the Oliver Twist of Dickens. He lives in an orphanage run by the evil Bumble, until he’s given to the family of Sowerberry because he is still allowed to ask for more food.
Mistreated, he runs away to London. When he arrives, exhausted, with bloody feet and hungry, joins the gang of Fagin, an old trickster who operates a group of thieves, including Doger and Charlie.
The group includes also Bill and two women, Beth and Nancy. In the band Oliver learned the art of "stealing" and the first time he went out to realize what he has learned is falsely accused of stealing a handkerchief to Mr. Brownlow.
Is led by the judge, but, just as he is to be judged, there comes Mr. Brownlow, who claims innocence of Oliver. So he is released and hosted in the villa of Mr. Brownlow, until one day, while he’s going to the library, is taken away from Nancy and Bill, who pretend to be his kin.
So Oliver is reported in the group of petty thieves. One evening Bill and a man with red hair led him to rob the house of Mr. Brownlow with the threat that if he talked, he would be shot.
Oliver comes in and opens to the two thieves, but then screams for help to Mr. Brownlow, so Bill shoots, hitting Oliver’s arm.
They fleeing and, on the way, Bill falls into the river. Nancy wants to save Oliver, however, and so secretly refers to Mr. Brownlow where was held the boy and tells him to go to the police.
Unfortunately, Nancy had been stalked by Dodger and then had been killed by Bill, because she had betrayed him.
Meanwhile, Fagin and all the other guys flee and take refuge in a haystack. Bill dies remaining entangled in a rope during the police chase and the others are taken.
Oliver Twist, finally, returns to live with Mr. Brownlow.

The film focuses on the situation of the 800 orphaned children, as well as on the issue of child exploitation that developed exactly in England as I’ll explain you later.
Moreover, to me personally, I did understand, when I saw it for the first time, that we can win the injustices in which we are forced to live, even at the cost of life, thanks to the courage, the willpower and the help of others.
After all, the goodness of the soul is present in each of us, even in bad people and Polanski's film teaches us very well.
La comparsa del fenomeno
Rivoluzione industriale
- L'incremento della produzione agricola ha potuto sostenere lo sviluppo demografico, iniziato a metà del XVIII secolo, fornendo una maggiore e migliore alimentazione;
- L'incremento produttivo agricolo ha pure liberato forza lavoro che è stata assorbita dall'industria del cotone e metallurgica in espansione;
- L'aumento della produttività nell'agricoltura e l'incremento del reddito agricolo ha creato sbocchi al mercato interno per i prodotti industriali;
