Question tags

Functions, use and examples

We use question tags when we just want to keep a conversation going, or confirm information. They are not really questions actually; they are a way to ask the other person to make a comment. They are a kind of small questions that come at the end of the sentences. We do not normally use them in formal written English but in spoken English.

You haven't got a brother, have you? (Tu non hai un fratello, giusto?)
It is a very lovely day, isn't it? (È proprio una deliziosa giornata, non è vero?)

We use a positive tag with a negative sentence and vice versa but not after questions.

“do” – “does” – “did” when in the main sentence there is not an auxiliary verb, in question tag we use examples:
She doesn't like his behaviour, does she? (Negative sentence but Positive Question Tag Auxiliary verb is used)

Some adverbs such as: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, barely and scarcely have a negative sense. So, even though they may be in a positive statement, the feeling of the statement is negative therefore we treat sentences with these words like negative statements and as consequence the question tag is normally positive. Ex. Peter rarely goes to the disco; does he?

Sometimes it is possible to use a positive-positive or negative-negative structure. They are called same-way tag questions and we use them to express interest, surprise, anger etc., and not to make real questions:
don’t like don’t you
Ex. So, you my new haircut, ? - Oh, this your new car, is it?

Wh-words

Use, functions and examples

In English, questions are usually introduced by the so-called WH-WORDS. These are WHO, WHAT, WHOM, WHOSE, WHERE, WHICH, WHAT, WHEN, HOW … and they are used to show what kind of information we are asking for. The wh-Words come at the beginning of their sentences according to the following structure:

WH-WORDS +AUXILIARY VERB+SUBJECT(VERB)
Where do you live?
What is your name?

When the wh-word is the subject, the wh-word comes before the verb and we cannot use the auxiliary do. See the examples below:

John likes apples
Who like apples? = John = soggetto (not who does like...)
What does John like? = apples = oggetto
