Dante and Tinder are not a “match”

The ways we date nowadays have changed since the time of “courtly love” or when our grandfathers courted our grandmothers, but now, in an era of digital connections, has love turned into an artificial emotion?

For many decades, Italian poets used to celebrate love in their sonnets in the loveliest ways, describing how just a glare from their beloved ones could make their hearts full of passion; so, we can’t really talk about dating in this period of time.

However, we have to consider the fact that most of the marriages, at the time of “courtly love”, in reality were arranged by the families of the future couples; so, we can’t really talk about dating in this period of time.

By the time our grandparents frequented each other, dating was a matter of family approval and commitment to traditional values. During courtship families played a central role in the matchmaking process. The young lovers weren’t free to express the love they felt for each other, gay relationships were prohibited, and boys and girls had to follow rigid rules if they wanted to go on a simple date.

Time has passed since those eras, and Italy has embraced a new approach to dating. Dating apps have become increasingly popular, an example is Tinder, where you could find your soulmate with a simple “click” on your mobile phone or just have some fun with a person you will never seen again. The concern about this digital way of dating is about the creation of superficial connections based on looks and instant judgments.

Yet, the chemistry between people is not only due to appearance, which yes plays a big role but not the most important one; the vibes and the personality someone gives off are the key for a person’s heart.
