Concetti Chiave
- In Italian Literature, the concept of the mask represents societal constraints, limiting personal identity and choices due to environmental influences.
- Transition periods in literature depict anti-heroes who struggle with the collapse of traditional structures, illustrated by characters like Zeno in "La coscienza di Zeno."
- Men without qualities are portrayed as indistinct, puppet-like figures, merely surviving rather than truly living, emblematic of societal paralysis.
- Dictatorships thrive in transitional times, exploiting confusion to impose control, as seen in the portrayal of loss of individuality in Orwell's "1984."
- The narrative highlights the human tendency to surrender decision-making to authoritative powers during periods of societal weakness and uncertainty.
What is the concept of the mask?
People are caged by masks that completely limit the possibility to live according to new choices. In Italian Literature, Pirandello thinks that masks are useful but the truth is a continuous flow of time and experiences, so everybody has to develop, in order to change and find an identity thanks to choices. But the problem is that the most of people adapt to the one they receive from education or from influences of the environment, because this is more convenient.
Transition and anti-heroes
We are in a period of transition in which people are confused and have to cope with the collapse of fixed structures, intact in the literature of of the first years of the 1900 the typical characters are antiheroes or men without qualities. For example, "La coscienza di Zeno" by Italo Svevo deals with a weak man, who can't even decide to stop smoking: Zeno, like the Hollow Men, understands that he never chose, he always adapted to what other people wanted him to be or he did the opposite, trying to escape from limitations, but this is not choosing, this is slavery as well.
Men without qualities
The Hollow Men are half alive and half paralyzed, "shape without form", an undistinguished group of men who are similar to puppets, given that they don't live, they just try to survive. Dictatorship creates a mass of unidentified people and establishes itself when people are confused, especially in a period of transition in which they prefer someone else to make decisions for them, who welcome a strong power, hoping that it will guide them. It's a period of weakness, they want dictatorship to replace them in individual minds: in "1984" by George Orwell the party replaces individual choices.
Domande da interrogazione
- What role do masks play in Italian literature according to Pirandello?
- How are anti-heroes depicted in early 20th-century literature?
- What is the significance of "men without qualities" in the context of dictatorship?
In Italian literature, Pirandello views masks as limiting forces that prevent individuals from living according to new choices. While masks can be useful, they often lead people to conform to societal expectations rather than developing their own identities through personal choices.
Early 20th-century literature often features anti-heroes, such as Zeno from "La coscienza di Zeno" by Italo Svevo, who are characterized by indecision and a lack of personal agency. These characters reflect the confusion and adaptation to external influences rather than making independent choices.
"Men without qualities" are depicted as passive and indistinct, similar to puppets, who merely survive rather than truly live. In times of transition and confusion, such individuals may welcome dictatorship, allowing it to replace their individual decision-making, as seen in George Orwell's "1984," where the party dictates choices for the masses.
