At the end of the civil war the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery and all former slaves became American citizens and had the right to vote by law. But when the troops of the Union left the south, southern whites made new laws and racial discrimination became regulated by the
so-called Jim Crow laws*, which established strict segregation of the races.
This legalized segregation lasted up to the 1960s. These laws established the physical separation of races. Schools, houses, trains, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, theatres, and shops were strictly segregated in all
southern states. This meant that black children had to attend separate schools, that Negroes had to sit in separate train carriages and could not go to white people’s restaurants or theatres. The Blacks had bad housing and underpaid jobs. The right to vote was abolished. Marriage between blacks and whites was forbidden. Negroes became second-class citizen and for years they had to face injustice, oppression, persecution and imprisonment.

After the end of civil war the president Abraham Lincoln was killed. In 1963 he had signed the emancipation declaration which declared all slaves as free and so All the southern owners were obliged to free their slaves and so they lost a lot of their power and of their money. But blacks weren't considered as equal members of american society infact they didn't enjoy the same rights as the whites did. They couldn't attend the same jobs as the whits, they couldn't enter in the same buildings as the whites, they couldn't sit on the same seats in buses because they were reserved for white people. The slaves couldn't read and write and so they were forced to live in segregation, the couldn't attend school with whites. They lived in special areas and accepted the most Umble Jobs and they still depend of the whites for their living.

TRaduzione:
