MEDIEVAL DRAMA

In the Middle Ages religious festivals and the church services which accompanied them were not only acts of worship, but opportunities for entertainment as well. During the great Christian festivals such as Christmas and Easter the most important events of the old and New Testament were represented in forms of dialogues sting between a priest and the choir. These stories from the Bible were told in Latin and first given dramatic form in the church In England, and all over Europe, such performances gradually moved outside into the churchyard and then into other parts of the town, Latin was replaced by the vernacular language as ordinary people took over the roles previously performed by the clergy This was the beginning of miracle and mystery plays in the 13th century, which developed over the next two hundred years. Although there is no elear distinction between mystery und miracle plays, mystery plays usually dealt with event Bible while miracle plays used stories from the lives of the saints The town guilds soon narrated in the took charge of the performances. As the form developed and the plays became more elaborate, the various companies' of men and artisans were given charge of individual scenes: indeed, the mystery' plays are so called because of the Middle mestier, which means'trude' or profession: The plays were mainly performed outdoors as there were no theatres yet: they were performed on movable stages called pageants. These pageants were drawn by harses and stopped at prearranged places in towns, often in the market place. They resembled a small house open o to sides. Each pageant represented an episode of the story, so people moved from one pageant another. Although dealing with serious religious themes, the mystery and miracle pla were a popular form of drama and elements of humour and playful parody were often included in the story

Morality plays, a form of religious allegorical drama, represented a popular medium by means of which the message of the Bible could be conveyed to a mostly illiterate audience, The characters, however, were not taken from the Bible but were usually symbols of fixed values and ideas such as the vices(greed, sloth, envy and so on) or the virtues(patience, temperance and so on). These characters would dispute questions of morality, usually within the context of Church dogma. he most highly regarded of the morality plays is Everyman, from the late 15th century, which deals with man's fear of and reconciliation with death In the 20th century interest in this type of episodic allegorical theatre was revived. particularly by the German Bertolt Brecht, who made modern use of aspects of the form in his Lehrstucke(didactic plays), such as The seven sm Brecht Renaissance, and adopted a looser rom Aristotle that had been introduced during the instead development of structure in order to teach lessons of history. As a consequence we see that the aesthetic form is not linear, and that the idea of progress in the arts is in part an illusion.

In the middle Ages religious festivals were told in Latin and represented in forms of dialogues. In the 13th century there was the distinction between mystery plays (I.e. event Bible) and miracle plays (lives of the saints). The plays were represented outdoors because there weren't theatres.

Morality plays were a form of religious allegorical drama which reptesented the message of the Bible and the characters were a symbol of morality and virtue and weren't taken by the Bible. The consequence is that the aesthetic form isn't linear and the idea of progress in the arts is an illusion.
