Introduzione

Inglese

Charles Dickens was an English writer who based most of his work on the social problems, regarding above all the bad situations in which children were used to live. He was obliged to leave school very early because his father went to prison and so he needed to work in a factory. This experience was useful to him, in the way it made him think about the bad conditions of children’s life. His aim was to make children a life example to follow. Although most of his novels are focused on the themes of poverty and children exploitation, he is also famous for some Christmas tales. I think the most important one, on which I set up my work, is “A Christmas Carol”. I chose to make my own work focused on this novel because, in my opinion its central theme, that is the progressive transformation of the main character’s behavior, represents the transition from the darkness (that metaphorically represents the avarice, the indifference and any other negative emotion that characterize Mr. Scrooge) to the light (that symbolize in a metaphorical way all the positive emotions which overpower the bad behavior of Mr. Scrooge at the end of the novel).

Plot

The book is divided into five chapters, which Dickens labels “staves”, that means song stanzas or verses. The tale begins on a “cold, bleak, biting” Christmas Eve exactly seven years after the death of Scrooge’s business partner Jacob Marley.

5 pag. 3

Scrooge, an old miser, hates Christmas. His only “Christmas gift” is allowing his overworked, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off with pay. At home that night, Scrooge is visited by Marley’s ghost, who is forever cursed to wander the earth dragging a network of heavy chains. He tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits and that he must listen to them or he would have a harder punishment after death. At this point Scrooge, guided by the spirits, engages himself in a journey, that will be useful to him in the sense it will represent his way of redemption. The first of the spirits, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge to Christmas scenes of his youth, which remind him of his lonely childhood. They also portray Scrooge’s neglected fiancée Belle who ends their relationship after she realises that Scrooge will never love her as much as he loves money. The second spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Present. They visit his nephew’s Christmas party, but most of this stave is taken up with Bob Cratchit’s family feast, and introduces his youngest son, Tiny Tim, who is full of simple happiness despite being seriously ill. The spirit informs Scrooge that Tiny Tim will soon die unless the course of events changes. The third spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, shows Scrooge Christmas Day one year later. Scrooge sees a shrouded corpse which he implores the spirit not to unmask.

After that, the story focuses on Bob Cratchit and his family mourning the passing of Tiny Tim. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come then shows Scrooge the man’s neglected grave: the name. So he pledges to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come that he will change his ways in hopes that he may “sponge the writing from this stone”.

At the end Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning with joy and love in his heart. He spends the day with Fred’s family and anonymously sends a prize turkey to the Cratchit home for Christmas dinner. The following day, he gives Cratchit a raise and becomes like “a second father” to Tiny Tim. A changed man, Scrooge now treats everyone with kindness, generosity, and compassion; he now embodies the spirit of Christmas.

Italiano
