Tesina su: Il suicidio Andreella Giulia 5°G
Inglese: In 1941, after a further mental collapse, Virginia Woolf filled the pockets of her overcoat with stones and drowned herself in the river Ouse.
Water was an important symbol for her: it represented on one hand harmony and femininity, on the other hand the possibility of the resolution of intolerable conflicts in death.
She had already tried to commit suicide for example in 1913 after a second depression, in spite of the fact she had been married to Leonard Woolf for one year.
Her first nervous breakdown had occurred in 1895 at the age of 13 when her mother had died. In 1904 the father died too and Virginia had her most alarming collapse.
Her depressive periods were also influenced by sexual abuse she and her sister Vanessa were subjected to by their half-brothers George and Gerald Duckworth.
The Second World War increased her fear: in the streets she saw the disintegration of her world.
The Woolfs escaped in Sussex, but, obsessed by the fear of madness, Virginia decided to put an end to her life.
The life of Virginia was difficult and full of mourning (mother, father and two brothers), to worsen the situation there was her illness that marked all her “Mrs. Dalloway”, there are references to mental
literary production. In her writing, in particular in
Insanity. In fact Septimus Warren Smith, like Virginia, suffers from hallucinations, insomnia, headaches and has mental disorder: he is a shell-shocked veteran of the war and at the end of the story, in a fit of madness, he kills himself jumping out of the window of his room.
For Septimus reality and imagination are mixed and he cannot distinguish them.
He dies to escape from the past, from Evan's death, because he feels himself guilty for the friend's death; he also dies in order to escape from being crushed by the forces of conventionality.
In the book there is criticism to the society, that did not support the people who had mental problems caused by the war.
Septimus had been prescribed a period of rest and isolation in a nursing house but he did not want to go there.
He was scared by the doctors because he thought they did not understand him and they treated him like a simple clinical case.
