Approfondimento personale

Alice nel paese delle meraviglie

Anno scolastico 2008/2009

Considerazioni personali

The Victorian Era

The reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), was a tremendously exciting period when many artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reforms; it was also a time, associated with "prudishness" and "repression".

The social classes of England were newly reforming, and fomenting; the middle classes were steadily growing and the upper classes' composition was changing from simply hereditary aristocracy to a combination of nobility and an emerging wealthy commercial class.

Conditions of the working class were bad, through the century, three reform bills gradually gave the vote to most males over the age of twenty-one. There was the horrible reality of child labor which persisted throughout the period. When a bill was passed stipulating that children under nine could not work in the textile industry, this in no way applied to other industries. There was also the problem of the teenaged prostitution.

The Victorian Era was also a time of scientific progress and ideas. Darwin expose the Theory of Evolution, the radical thought associated with modern psychiatry began with Sigmund Feud toward the end of the era, and radical economic theory, developed by Karl Marx and his associates, began a second age of revolution in mid-century.

The "prudishness" and "repressiveness" that we associate with this era is a somewhat erroneous association. Though, people referred to arms and legs as limbs and extremities, and many other things that make us titter, because they had a degree of modesty and a sense of propriety that we hardly understand today.

An art movement indicative of this period was the Pre-Raphaelites, the artists convey a moral message through their works.

As stated, the Victorian Age was an extremely diverse and complex period. It was, indeed, the precursor of the modern era, so to understand the world today in terms of society, culture, science, and ideas, it is imperative to study this period.

Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of the English writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born on 27 January 1832, son of a clergyman and firstborn of 11 children, Carroll began at an early age to entertain himself and his family with magic tricks, marionette shows, and poems written for homemade newspapers. From 1846 to 1850 he attended Rugby School; he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1854. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students.

Although he took deacon's orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests.

Carrol is especially known for “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking Glass” (1872), children's books that are also distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit.

Among Carroll's avocations was photography, at which he became proficient.

He excelled especially at photographing children, Alice Liddell, one of the three daughters of Henry George Liddell, the dean of Christ Church, was one of his photographic subjects and the model for the fictional Alice.

Carroll's comic and children's works also include “The Hunting of the Snark”

(1876), two collections of humorous verse, and the two parts of “Sylvie and Bruno” (1889, 1893).

As a logician, he was more interested in logic as a game than as an instrument for testing reason.

He died on 14 January 1898.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

One summer afternoon, Alice, a little girl in Victorian England, starts to drift off to sleep while sitting under a tree with her sister. she notices a White Rabbit looking at his watch and talking to himself. She follows the Rabbit down a very deep rabbit hole and ends up far beneath the ground in a hall with a tiny locked door that leads to a beautiful garden.

She eats and drinks things that make her change in size, but she is still unable to get through the door into the garden.

When she becomes huge, she cries in frustration and after she becomes small and swims around in a pool made of her own tears; Alice manages to get out of the pool and dries off; then she comes across a Caterpillar smoking, he irritates Alice and asks her to recite poetry, which she cannot do properly.

Alice comes to a house in the woods, where a Duchess, her ugly baby, her hostile Cook, and her Cheshire Cat reside.
