O Sherlock Holmes and his methods

He is the first specialist of the crime and the creator of criminology, a science based on:

• Systematic collection on evidence;
• Classification of data;

“When you have eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”.

Abduction method

I know the rules, but I want to discover the presuppositions

Holmes’ method starts from observation of details and the most improbable ones.

Applies the abduction method.

1. Using this it's important to be open to everything that could be useful to explain the fact.
2. All possibilities must be analyzed through category of possibilities.
3. He takes into consideration not only the visible events, but also their absence.
4. Negative obviousness is very important.

Application of the abduction method from «The Sign of Four»

Holmes recognized that Watson went to the Post-Office that morning:

• He sees a little reddish mould on his instep: in front of the Post-Office they have taken up the pavement and thrown up some earth of that particular reddish.
• Holmes observed Watson that morning and deduced that he has to send a telegram.

Holmes’ method comes from Joseph Bell.

During his lessons he used to underline the importance of observation and he is famous for his art of deduction.

• Molto attento ai particolari.
• Osserva attentamente ogni dettaglio, anche il più insignificante.
• Giunge a conclusioni logiche escludendo l’impossibile come Sherlock Holmes.
