Children's exploitation during the Victorian age
The Victorian age became known for child labour, in fact in that time childhood was generally a cruel experience. A lot of children from poor classes were obliged to work in factories, mines, or as chimney sweeps and domestic servants. In 1840, only 20% of children attended school in London and the ones that didn't work became criminals.
Children had to help their parents to support the family budget, often working lots of hours in dangerous activities and for a very low pay. They were exploited to do activities that adults were not able to do. Supple children were used as chimney sweepers, smaller ones were used to slip under the machinery to retrieve cotton spools. They were also employed to work in coalmines because they could reach tunnels too tight and low for an adult. Children then worked as bellboys, scavengers, flower sellers or shoe-shine boys.
Victorian literature shows that condition in its novels. At the age of twelve, Charles Dickens was sent to work in a blacking factory and that traumatic experience marked him for life and for his work as a novelist. Dickens was a pioneer in introducing the theme of education into his works. He strongly believed in universal education, though not necessarily under a state system.
Between 1837 and 1857 he published fourteen novels including Oliver Twist, an adventure story in which Dickens faces the social evils of his time, like poor houses, unjust courts and the underworld. The novel reflects the economic insecurity and humiliation Dickens experienced as a child. The accidental name of the protagonist, Twist, represents the reversal of fortune that he will suffer. Oliver Twist is a poor boy of unknown parents who is brought in a workhouse and then sold to an undertaker as an apprentice. The cruelty and the unhappy experience lived with his new master forced him to escape and run away to London. Here Oliver falls in a gang of young criminals headed by the elderly Fagin that forced him to commit theft. Later Oliver is adopted by a middle-class family that shows him kindness and affection and he also discovers his noble origins.
