Frankenstein

“No one can conceive the anguish I suffered during the remainder of the night, which I spent, cold and wet, in the open air. But I did not feel the inconvenience of the weather; my imagination was busy in scenes of evil and despair. I considered the being whom I had cast among mankind, and endowed with the will and power to effect purposes of horror, such as the deed which he had now done, nearly in the light of my own vampire, my own spirit let loose from the grave, and forced to destroy all that was dear to me.”

Mary Shelley, a novelist of the Romantic Age, explores the borders of the comparison with the other self in “Frankenstein”. The writer started writing the novel when she was on holiday in Switzerland, in 1816, as a ghost story competition. She published it in 1818 anonymously, because women couldn’t write serious literature in the Romantic Age and it became an immediate success.

The narrative structure

Set at the end of the 18th century, “Frankenstein” is told in the first person by three different narrators. These are:

  • Robert Walton, an ambitious explorer on his way to the North Pole who travels towards the unknown going beyond human limits;
  • Victor Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with discovering the secret of how to create life defeating death;
  • The Monster, his unnamed creation similar to a man in a primitive state not influenced by civilization.

The story isn’t presented in chronological order, because the book is written in the form of letters from Walton to his sister back to England, re-telling events told him by Victor.

These tell of the creation of the Monster and Frankenstein’s abandoning of it, an action that leads to his death and the deaths of those he cares for.

The themes

The novel is influenced by the attitude of English intellectuals who are interested in revolutionary ideas, but who are frightened by the possible negative consequences of the revolution.

In fact, Frankenstein sympathizes with his creation and gives it life ignoring everything and everyone.

But, when he manages to uncover the secrets of nature, he flees, terrified after finding the horror of his creation, because he is also afraid of the consequences of his actions.

The main themes are: the quest for forbidden knowledge and the overreacher, because of Walton’s and Frankenstein’s wish to overcome human limits and penetrate Nature’s secrets.

Linked with this is the theme of the usurpation of the female role, in fact Victor is both father and mother of the Monster.

However, he is a parent distorted because he does not grow nor instructs, but he abandons the creature.

So the dualism between good and evil is more subtle and the division of sins is not instinctive, because:

The horrid monster is intelligent and good in deep, has a natural sensibility, wants to love and to be loved. But, instead, it is abandoned and it becomes a murderer and a rebel because it is rejected, so it is created by the rejection of his creator and of everybody.

Shelley shows the social injustice and prejudice;

The father, the positive hero, on the contrary, is not such, because he avoids the creature with a sense of repellency, seeing it as a simulacrum of his own guilt.

It is Victor who first has challenged the laws of God, so his the sin and the guilt are.

The creature personifies then the evil reflection of its creator and here can be found the theme of the double: the monster is the projection of Victor’s negative self, in fact Frankenstein and his monster can be considered one person and Frankenstein himself says that the monster is his “own spirit”.
