Australia

Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere. The seasons are opposite of those in Europe: when it is winter in Europe it is summer in Australia and vice versa. When it is daytime in Europe it is night-time in Australia.

Australia is surrounded by the sea: in the east there is the Pacific Ocean and in the west there is the Indian Ocean. In the south there is an island state called Tasmania.

Australia is divided into 6 federal states: South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria. There are also two important areas: Northern Territory and a federal district (Australian Capital Territory) where Canberra, the capital city, is situated.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, Perth is the capital of Western Australia, Adelaide is the capital of Southern Australia, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and Hobart is the capital of Tasmania.

The population is 22 million. The capital is Canberra. The currency is the Australian dollar and the government is the union of six federal states which form the Commonwealth of Australia. The British monarch is the Head of State.

The highest mountain is Mount Kosciusko (2,228 m) and the longest rivers are the Murray and Darling. The climate is generally arid to semiarid; temperate in the south and east; tropical in the north.
