Amplificazione

Introduzione

From vacuum tubes to transistors

During the World War II, the first electronic digital machine with limited programmability was developed.

It was limited, because it solved only single problems.

This machine was called Colossus Mark I and it was designed by the English mathematician Max Newman and was created by the English engineer Tommy Flowers.

Mark I was used by the Royal Navy to decode the encrypted German messages between Adolf Hitler and his chiefs of states.

To build this machine, 1500 vacuum tubes were used.

Vacuum tubes were used only as amplifiers before building the Mark I.

Using these components, it was possible to raise the calculating power of Mark I.

The vacuum tubes used in this project were the first active electronic components in the history.

In the vacuum tube there are two electrodes, called anode and cathode.

Between the electrodes there is a grid.

If the cathode is negatively charged, there is an exchange of electrons from cathode to anode.

In this way with a small voltage variation in input, a big current is created in output.

The disadvantages of vacuum tubes are that they are big and they produce heat.

The advantage is that with their invention the humans inaugurated the new era of mass media.

Now, we live in this era and the component which has replaced the vacuum tubes is the transistor, because unlike vacuum tubes, transistors are small, cheap, and reliable.

The invention of transistor was possible with the development of semiconductor technology.

Semiconductors more used are silicon and germanium.

Generally the transistor is made of silicon.

Physically these components have three terminals: base, emitter and collector.

They are made up of two types of semiconductors.

There is the n-type and p-type semiconductor.

In this way are created two junctions, the NP junction and the PN junction.

In fact this component is called “bipolar junction transistor” or BJT.

The BJT has two configurations, NPN or PNP.

In both types there is a small current in input to the base that controls an amplified output from the collector.

For this reason the BJT is used as a powerful amplifier or as a switch.

There are other types of transistors, for example the FET (field-effect transistor) and the MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor).

The FET has three terminals: gate, source and drain.

In n-type FET the source and the drain are negatively charged, in this way when a positive voltage is applied to the gate an electron channel between source and drain is created.

In this situation the FET is on, while if there isn’t a voltage to the gate the FET is off.

Another type of transistor used today is the MOSFET.

It has a gate (G) that is separated from the electron channel, formed by the source (S) and the drain (D), by a layer of metal oxide which acts as dielectric.

Its output is controlled by an input voltage applied to the gate which creates an electric field.

This field controls the resistance of the electron channel so that the current in output to the source can be increased or decreased.

SCR

L’SCR possiede tre terminali, gate (G), anodo (A) e catodo (K).
