George iii and the seven years' war
George III was the grandson of George II. He was the third British monarch of the house of Hanover, and the first of them to be born in Britain and speak English as his first language. When he came to the throne (1760), the Seven Year’s War was in the final stage. But his reign was marked by a series of military conflict. Britain defeated Spain and occupied Havana and Manila. William Pitt would have wanted to continue the war with France, but George wanted to save English lives and money, so Pitt resigned.
The american colonies and taxation
In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers, a group of Protestants, wanted to escape from Catholic persecutions, so they went to America where they founded the first colonies, and the first one in North America was New Plymouth. The Americans were not represented in the London Parliament, so they did not accept that they had to pay taxes imposed them without their representation or consent. Several taxes were in fact imposed by Britain but soon repealed, except the one on tea. So the colonies boycotted the imported tea and some protesters in Boston threw a large quantity of tea into the port, which was closed. The other twelve colonies supported Boston and asked Britain to withdraw its garrison. British Parliament could not accept this and war broke out in 1775. George Washington was made commander-in-chief of the American army. On July 4, 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia and declared their independence.
