The feeling of invisibility
Something that I believe has been experienced by everyone at least once in their life, is the feeling of being invisible. If we could see all of our memories in front of us like on a filmstrip, I am sure we would all find that particular moment in which we felt like we were alone in the world. We could define this type of invisibility as 'harmless', because, sooner or later, we find a way out of it. However, there are some people that do not so easily come out of it, people who feel like this all of their life.
Invisibility among young people
Contrary to what is generally assumed, feeling invisible is a common experience, especially among teenagers. Actually, I feel that people do not think about this issue at all, and that's why we do not even realize it also affects the people closest to us.
Personally, I do not recognize anyone among the people I know that is considered invisible, but it is something that can be easily seen on the Internet.
Social networks are full of young people who feel the need to shout at the world that they exist, but too afraid of saying it out loud to their friends and family, they write about it on their profiles.
Consequences of invisibility
This invisibility they feel is often caused by the lack of interest showed by the people closest to that person, who consequently feels unlistened, unappreciated and unloved. Mostly, it is parents that cause this feeling to grow inside teenagers, but this can also originate in school, when teachers and classmates do not give the right amount of importance to one's opinion.
Nevertheless, this problem comes with greater consequences that one would imagine: indeed, it can bring those affected to do something crazy in order to be noticed, or even worse, to self-harm.
The importance of attention
I believe that we need to become less self-centered, to show more interest towards those people who seem lonely and friendless, but also to the ones close to us, because we might have not given them enough attention.
