Concetti Chiave

  • There are three main types of stitches: temporary, permanent, and decorative, each serving different purposes in sewing.
  • Temporary stitches, such as even basting, uneven basting, and diagonal basting, temporarily hold fabric pieces together and are removed when no longer needed.
  • Diagonal basting is particularly useful for maintaining the position of multiple fabric layers until final stitching is done.
  • Tailor's tackle is a temporary stitch used for transferring pattern markings onto thick fabrics simultaneously.
  • The procedure for tailor's tackle involves using a contrasting thread, doubling it without a knot, and making loops to mark fabric points effectively.

Types of stitches

Stickes: there are broadly three types of stitches - the temporary, the permanent and the decorative stitches.
1) Temporary stitches: these hold pieces of fabric together temporarily. They are removed as soon as they served their purposes. Examples of temporary stitches are:

Even basting or tacking: the stitches and spaces between them are equal. Work from right to left. Begin with the thread knotted or make a back stitch.

Uneven basting or tacking: this is made up of short and long stitches.

Diagonal basting: this is useful for holding together two or more layers of materials to prevent them from slipping out of position until final stitching is completed. Start with a knotted thread. Push the needle vertically through all layers.

Tailor's tackle: these are made for transferring pattern marking to two pieces of fabrics at the same time. They are only suitable for thick strong cloth.

Procedure for the tailor's tackle

Procedure:

a) Use thread of different colour from that of the fabric.

b) Double the thread but di not make a knot.

c) Leave the end of the thread about 2.5 - 3.00 cm.

d) Make two small stitches through the pattern and fabric at point where marking is needed.

e) Make a loop of thread there at least 2.00 cm

f) Clip the thread to make another end 2.5 cm to 3.00 cm

g) After all tacks have been made, clip the thread between the tacks and through each loop.
