Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. Was an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. He was one of the most provocative, entertaining and notorious exponents of a literary movement know as aestheticism.
Wilde’s life was characterize of excesses of all type that for he are a form of art, especially his numerous relationship whit other man (in some way also young man) that give him a lot of problems, like the hard labor after a denounce by a father of Wilde’s lover, Alfred Douglas: is conceived his life as a work of art. He was a dandy who wore elegant clothes and behaved unnaturally and studying gestures, researching paradoxes. He was a rebel, and demanded absolute freedom.
With his study obtain medal, honours course and scholarship especially for the study of Greek.
In fact the culture of ancient Greece, and especially the Hellenic expression for the BEAUTY, allow Wilde to follow his vocation for the AESTETISM . Wilde said that the AESTETISM is a science that study the BEAUTY and that is possible find it in all thinks: in fact the search of the BEAUTY is the AESTETE’s fundament.
The AESTETISM is associate with the idea of “Art for art’s sake” that, for Wilde is a moral imperative, not only an aesthetical one; only art as the cult of beauty could prevent the murder of the soul. He thought the artist was an alien in a materialistic world, wrote only for himself and was not concerned in communicating his theories to others.
The idea of AESTETISM is express especially in “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, the only novel of Wilde.
The protagonist of this novel is Dorian Gray, an handsome young man that meet Lord Henry Wotton at the boutique of Basil, a painter that love Dorian and painted a beautiful picture of this boy. Dorian, enchanted for the picture, start to have the obsession of the beauty and give his soul to the Devil to remain always handsome like his image on the paint, while the picture get old and ugly. Dorian live in the vice and excess and the picture start to become ugly and horrible, disfigure for the excesses of the boy. But in the end, when Dorian look the picture, disgust destroy this and die.
The moral is that every excess must be punished and reality cannot be escaped. When Dorian destroyed the picture, he cannot avoided the punishment for all his sins that is death.
The horrible picture could be seen as a symbol of the immorality of the Victorian middle class hypocrisy. Finally the picture restored to its artificial beauty illustrates Wilde’s theory of Art’s: art survives people, art is eternal.
